Internationals Progress, Locals Impress

The Billabong boost Junior Series was held today in picture perfect conditions at Avoca Beach. Perfect off-shore, three foot left handers, warm water and sunshine made it perfect for the worlds best junior surfers to showcase their enormous potential.

The highest heat score of the day went to Byron Bays Beau Walker, 18, who posted 23 points out of a possible 30 after receiving some tips from Billabong Coach and former top professional Michael MungaEBarry.

Yeah, Mungas great. He just gives good advice and really settles you down before a heat,Esaid Walker. I was a little bit nervous at the start but got a couple of waves and surfed really strongly at the end.E

Also nervous was the second place getter in the same heat, Wade Rixon not surprising, seeing as he is only 15 and was one of the few local Central Coast surfers competing in the round. Rixon, weighing in at about 25 kilograms with a wet towel also got some helpful advice.

I was heaps nervous but my Dad told me just to enjoy myself and catch a few waves. I needed a really good one at the end and luckily I got it,Esaid Rixon who counts Fraser Park as his local break.

He in fact scored a 7-point ride in the last minute to out Portuguese surfer Marlon Lipke. Lipke was one of the few international surfers not to progress.

Tahitian Tim Boal, Reunion Island Jeremy Flores, Kiwis Luke Cedarman and Danny Carse, Frenchman Hugo Savalli and South Africas Damien Fahrenfort, whilst not, dominating their heats all progressed.

For 15-year-old Fahrenfort, a Capetown local the water and weather was rewarding enough. Back home the water would be ten degrees, I would be wearing a hood, booties and a thick steamer. I love Australia!E

The international contingent plus Aussie standouts like Walker, the Gold Coast Tai Graham, Werris Beachs Ryan Bailey and Phillip Islands Steve Noble will all surf in the top seeded round of 64.

With more fine weather and great waves predicted, it should prove to be a scorcher.
