QUIKSILVER GROMMETS TOUR 2001
Llangennith Wales, Heat no.3
The third event in this series was hosted by the Welsh Surfing Federation
and held at Llangennith Beach on Saturday 7th July.
There was a full entry in the Under 14īs and 12 competitors in the Under
16īs. Unfortunately the waves in the morning were incontestable. Everybody
decided to wait for the tide to turn and meanwhile retired to the local to
watch the Lions game.
At three o clock the contest got under way in admittedly very small surf.
However the little guys in the Under 14īs made the best of the conditions
and by the time the Under 16īs got in the water at midtide the wave was
slightly better.
Harry Cromwell from Pembroke took both the Under 14īs title and also picked
up a trophy for the best wave score of the day while Llangennith local Ryan
Akins made full use of his local knowledge to take the Under 16 title.
Quiksilver surfers Spencer Hargraves, Alan Stokes, Mark Harris and Ben
Skinner all turned up to inspire the kids and braved the small waves with
the help of some longboards and in Stokesyīs case a WSF surf school Swell
board.
Quiksilver supported junior surfing as they intended but also indirectly
supported senior Welsh surfing as all the officials from the Welsh Surfing
Federation donated their expenses towards the cost of this yearīs trip to
the European Championships.
All the competitors were really enthusiastic about the day despite the surf
and everyone had a great day. For some of the kids it was their first taste
of competitive surfing and two of these made the final - Tom Dean in the
Under 14īs and Fudge Pemberton in the Under 16īs. It was great to see all
these youngsters really getting stoked despite the small waves and grey
skies.
