Sponsorship blow for top surfer
Russell Winter who received an injury wildcard for this years WCT has, it is reported, injured himself again. Details are not at hand, however it is understood he will participate at Bells.
To add to this trauma, the following report on his current lack of sponsorship, is an example of the difficulties even top professional surfers sometimes encounter on the financial side of things.
Alan Barber reports;-
Newquay´s world-class surfer Russell Winter is devastated after failing to find a new backer two months after his main sponsor refused to renew a £20,000-a-year deal.
Russell, who is the only European surfer ever to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour - the grand prix of world surfing - says he has been left high and dry in the first month of this year´s series after Headworx refused to renew his contract.
Now the 25-year-old is locked in a frustrating struggle to secure a new sponsor while trying to concentrate on picking up early points some 16,000 miles away in
Australia.
Russell exclusively told the Cornish Guardian this week: " Headworx´s decision not to renew my contract came as a real shock especially after having a productive meeting late with them in the year 2000.
