Wave Masters Society was founded in
1982, it is a not-for-profit group of
"mature" surfers, male & female, ranging in age from 25 to 65, and hailing
from a wide variety of professions. What started as a travel club for
maturing surfers has now evolved into an organization which raises thousands
of dollars for kidsī charities through their annual surfing contest as well
as other benevolent activities throughout the year.
They meet the first Tuesday of every month at Manatee Rayīs Restaurant to
enjoy a few brews, discuss recent and future surf trips, ecological issues,
and local philanthropic activities. (Early Saturday morning breakfast at the
Pier is optional.) Fifteen years ago they decided to host a surf contest to
raise money for local charities. It was a big hit. Every year since, the
contest has gotten bigger and better.
Today that contest has evolved into Floridaīs largest and most prestigious
open amateur Surfing Tournament. This annual contest attracts over 300
competitors from all over the southeast, ages 7 to 70, not to mention the
1000īs of spectators. Over 30 thousand dollars has been raised and donated
towards youth-orientated and under priviledged type charity organizations
since the contestīs inception in 1984. Among last yearīs recipients were:
* The Carver Centerīs Computer Program
* Beaches Boys & Girls Club
* The Eastern Surfing Association
* Fellowship of Christian Athletes
* The Beaches Library InterNet Program
* The Association of Retarded Citizens.
