High Surf Pounds San Diego Coast
A surfer was pulled unconscious and near death from the water at Blacks Beach Tuesday after high surf pounded the area.
The man was originally found floating face down in the water by another surfer, Matt Coleman (pictured, left), who pulled him to the beach.
"He was face down underwater. I pulled him up and then just tried to get him to the beach as fast as I can so that I could do CPR," Coleman said.
When Coleman dragged the victim to the beach, nurse Kim Hannon happened to be walking past.
"As soon as they got him on the beach I knew that he was not breathing, so I started CPR right away. Iīve been doing this work for a long time. Itīs the first time I had to do it outside a hospital, but hopefully heīll do OK." " Hannon said.
Paramedics were called to the foot of Black Gold Road about 12:10 p.m. The patient was then taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla where he was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit.
About 4:25 p.m., paramedics were again called to Blacks Beach for a surfer in distress. That person was breathing when he was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital, a fire dispatcher said.
The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory at 4:10 p.m., predicting "surf from a large west swell will peak early this evening." San Diego surf was expected to reach 6 to 10 feet.
